"Old Herd" Leather Bound Photo Album |
The "Old Herd" photos were taken in Winchester, Idaho, in 1994 on Nez Perce Tribal Lands. Many of the "Old Herd" broodmares were mingled in with Appaloosas owned by John & Rosa Yearout of Lapwai, Idaho. Chief Ollokot was Chief Joseph's brother. Ollokot was unable to gather his horses to move them onto the Nez Perce Reservation at Lapwai from the Wallowa Mountain pastures as odered by General Howard. Ollokot entrusted the Appaloosas he could not gather to a white rancher who had settled in the Wallowas. Chief Ollokot was killed at the Bears Paw Battle and never returned. The rancher's family members gave Chief Ollokot's descendant horses back to Irvin Waters in the 1980's. Irvin Waters was a direct descendant of Chief Ollokot. In time, John & Rosa Yearout of Lapwai, Idaho, assumed responsibility for the care of Ollokot's "Old Herd" Appaloosas. This remarkably beautiful and rare photo album is stunning. The album has fifteen 8X10 images on luxurious glossy paper for enhanced beauty. It will be a cherished heirloom for you and members of your family for years to come. |

![]() Alex Cross was a remarkably talented young Nez Perce teenager full of life. He was the first Nez Perce to camp in the Hoodoo Basin since his ancestors slept there on a cold night in September 1877. Alex was awarded a "Nez Perce Trail" scholarship funded in large part by Marshall Dominick of the 7D Ranch and Stan Hoggatt, Nez Perce author, historian and photographer. Everyone on the pack trip fell in love with this exceptional young man. At the end of the summer of 1998, Alex attended college at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho. Alex had a successful first year in college, and everyone was so proud of his accomplishments. Tragically, we lost Alex that summer. A Memorial Scholarship Fund has been set up by Alex's mother, Darla Jackson, to benefit other young and aspiring Nez Perce teenagers interested in a college education. A portion of the funds from the sale of this heirloom are donated to the Alex Cross Memorial Scholarship Fund. |
