The CD "NiMiiPuu Traverse Yellowstone Plateau" was designed to be used by educators in a classroom, libraries for student and public research, and by archives providing public access to historical documents. The official publication release date of April 19, 2007, marks a milestone in the completion of this project. Research on the project began in 1976; and during that time, archive resources at the National Archives, the Smithsonian Institute, the Nez Perce National Historical Park, the Montana Historical Society, the Idaho Historical Society, the Oregon Historical Society, and the Washington State Historical Society were used. Field research began in 1992 with a series of backpack trips followed by numerous pack trips and day rides on horseback through the back country of Yellowstone Park, the Crandall Creek area and Sunlight Basin, Wyoming. The actual writing and development of this significant historical resource for the NiMiiPuu took 10 years to complete. The CD contains four slide programs with interpretive notes for educators. Each slide presentation contains numerous historical photos and references to historical documents, many of which are rare and have not been published until now. The appendix includes over 35 historical documents for research and reference. An SQL data base search engine is used; which enables you to search on any indexed word or phrase on slides, interpretive notes, or in the appendix while in outlined mode. A separate Master Index is provided giving you ease of use lookup and search capabilities for all indexed word and phrases throughout the system when in "Outline" mode. The following slide presentations are included:
- "Chief Joseph's (Young Joseph's) Life" This presentation is designed for young people between the ages of 8 to 16. (A voice over upgrade will be available for purchase in 2009.)
- "Chief Joseph's Youth, Diplomacy and Principles" It is difficult, if not impossible, to understand the will to survive and protect the NiMiiPuu ancestoral lands from the European onslaught without knowledge of Joseph's life, his diplomacy, and his leadership skills that had a profound impact on the course of Native American and American History in the 1800s.
- "NiMiiPuu Cross the Absaroka Divide" Follow the NiMiiPuu from Raven Creek in Pelican Valley through the HooDoos. You will learn about significant and heretofore unknown historical facts; for example, Captain Fisher was not the only military scout ordered by General Howard to follow the NiMiiPuu. Captain Robbins was ordered at Soda Butte to follow the NiMiiPuu over the Absaroka Divide. You'll also find that Captain Robbins was the last military officer to follow the NiMiiPuu; and he, along with his men, followed the NiMiiPuu through the Clarks Fork Canyon.
- "NiMiiPuu Triumph at Clarks Fork Canyon" Explore the routes of the Nez Perce; learn about the Nez Perce Council Meeting on top of Dead Indian the evening of September 8th; and then follow the NiMiiPuu down into the Clarks Fork Canyon and across the ford on the Clarks Fork River. Finally, learn that the NiMiiPuu exited the canyon through "The Devils Doorway." The skill, daringness and tenacity that the NiMiiPuu employed during this unbelievable trek has counfounded historians since the end of the Nez Perce War of 1877. Now, for the first time, you will be able to examine never before published historical documents and make your own conclusions about the NiMiiPuu routes followed, and why, by simply using the search features of the SQL data base.
